Genocide Memorial Rugby 7s 2025 Breaks Records at Amahoro Stadium.

On 21st June 2025, the 11th edition of the Genocide Memorial Rugby 7s Tournament marked a significant step forward for Rwandan Rugby, drawing a record 21 teams, 12 men’s teams and 9 women’s teams to compete in the newly renovated Amahoro Stadium, upgraded to meet international standards.

This annual tournament is organized by the Rwanda Rugby Federation (RRF) in partnership with the Ministry of Sports and Rwanda National Olympic and Sports Committee (RNOSC).

It serves as a powerful platform to honor the memory of the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, especially the athletes who lost their lives. More than a competition, the event promotes remembrance, unity, and peace through the spirit of sport.

 Women’s Category Final Standings

•Champions: 1000 Hills Rugby

•1st Runners-up: Gitisi TSS

•2nd Runners-up: Resilience RFC

1000 Hills Rugby RFC displayed exceptional performance throughout the tournament and claimed the women’s title with a decisive 40–07 victory over Gitisi TSS in the final.

Resilience RFC secured third place after a strong and consistent showing across their matches.

 Men’s Category Final Standings

•Champions: Lions de Fer RFC

•1st Runners-up: Rams Kampala RFC

•2nd Runners-up: 1000 Hills Rugby

Lions de Fer RFC were crowned the 2025 men’s champions after a remarkable tournament run.

Rams Kampala RFC earned second place following a disciplined and strategic campaign, while 1000 Hills Rugby RFC, despite reaching the semi-finals, were officially ranked third based on overall tournament performance and points.

•Women’s MVP: UWERA Ernestine from Gitisi TSS

•Men’s MVP: Ryan Juko from Kampala Rams  RFC

These players stood out for their exceptional skill, leadership, and impact on the game, earning well-deserved recognition as the tournament’s top performers.

The 2025 edition of the Genocide Memorial Rugby 7s Tournament was more than just a sporting event; it was a celebration of resilience, remembrance, and growth. Mr. Tharcisse Kamanda, the President of the Rwanda Rugby Federation, delivered his closing remarks at the conclusion of the 11th edition of the Genocide Memorial Rugby 7s Tournament.

He began with a warm greeting and stated : As we draw the curtain on the 11th edition of the Genocide Memorial Rugby 7s Tournament, I take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt appreciation to all the teams, players, coaches, officials, and partners whose contributions made this tournament a success.Tharcisse Kamanda the President of Rwanda Rugby Federation As he mentioned, Good evening, everyone. Congratulations to our champions, 1000 Hills Rugby, Lions de Fer RFC, and Rams Kampala RFC, for your exceptional performance.

A special mention goes to Lions de Fer for their achievements in both categories and to Rams Kampala for proudly representing Uganda.

This tournament is more than sport; it is a moment of remembrance and reflection. We honor the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, especially athletes who never got to live their dreams.

The Rwanda Rugby Federation firmly condemns Genocide denial and distortion, and this event stands as testimony to the truth.

Rugby unites us, teaches us discipline, and gives us hope. I thank our partners, including the Ministry of Sports and Rwanda National Olympic and Sports Committee, for their continued support.

Issac Ngendahimana, representing RNOSC, emphasized the importance of carrying forward the spirit of unity and resilience that defines both Rwanda and sports.

In the men’s category, Lions de Fer took sweet revenge by defeating Rams Kampala, who had beaten them last year.

In the women’s category, former champions Kamonyi Panthers dropped from the podium, while 1000 Hills Rugby RFC rose to dominance with a commanding final win.

These shifts highlight how team strength and competition dynamics have significantly evolved from the 10th to the 11th edition.

Rwanda Rugby Federation

The Rwanda Rugby Federation (RRF) as the umbrella organisation that unites the entire rugby fraternity in Rwanda. RRF has been administering, developing and generally organising all rugby activities since 2002, not only through out Rwanda but on the continental level as well. The RRF has since grown further countrywide with over 800 active players, 300 female players, a robust fun club, ardent well wishers and intensive involvement in the development of the game in over 240 schools from all districts in Rwanda not to mention the RRF’s participation in community projects.
